The Debate 09/26/08
Without a doubt, America’s hero John McCain has a steep challenge ahead of him tonight if he’s to compete with the Left’s Chosen One.
Though the focus of the debate is foreign affairs — McCain’s strongest issue, it will doubtless focus intently on America’s economy — an issue Peggy Noonan yields to the Democrats. Moderators may try to steer the debate away from the issue, but they’ll know, as will the candidates, that America needs answers and solutions.
On personality — perhaps the most important asset of a televised debate — Barack has proven that he can stand atop mountains parting oceans and pied pipe followings with the best of them. I expect Barack will show up tonight with one-line zingers and fancy footwork that will dazzle America’s mainstream media.
As for John McCain — well, because of the reasons I’ve listed above I think he’s been dealt a pretty bad chance of pulling out a victory tonight.
To me, one thing is clear: If Barack doesn’t get a 6-8 point bounce after tonight, Barack will have lost and the Democrats will continue to look over at Hillary wishing they had let her wear the jersey.
