Investor’s Business Daily 07/22/08
I’m quoted in an article today about the different technology being embraced by Barack and The Mac running at Investor’s Business Daily.
My quote:
David All agrees that blogs are one of the Republican campaign’s strengths. All is a Web consultant who has worked on GOP sites such as whereisthered.com and Slatecard.com. He lauds McCainBlogette.com, which is run by the Arizona senator’s daughter Meghan.
“There are a lot of folks in my generation that read that blog,” the 29-year-old All told IBD.
But All criticizes other online efforts by the McCain campaign, such as one Facebook application called “Pork Invaders” and another called “Campaign Cribs: Straight Talk Express.” The applications, inspired by the classic arcade game “Space Invaders” and the MTV show “Cribs,” have less than 100 active daily users. “Campaign Cribs” features a staffer giving a tour of McCain’s well-known bus.
“I thought it was a missed opportunity for people to connect with John McCain,” All said. “Why couldn’t he (instead of the staffer) show people around the Straight Talk Express?
My point on the “Campaign Cribs” “application” (which I wouldn’t really call it an app as much as I’d call it a basic video player) is that if you’re given an authentic candidate like John McCain who has built an entire messaging strategy around the notion of “straight talk,” why wouldn’t you want to take five minutes out of the candidate’s schedule to give us/we/you a personal tour?
McCain would have been able to talk about what the “straight talk express” means to him — behind-the-scenes — and would have given us what we really need to see: John McCain. The app was a missed opportunity to show an authentic, likable John McCain which we all know he is deeper down.
