Def one of McCain’s young backers 06/12/08

I’m quoted heavily in a Bloomberg piece today about how a younger crew of Republicans is screaming at the top of their lungs to our elders to quit being “modern ostriches” with regard to the Internet.

However, the most important quote in the article comes from our next President, John McCain:

McCain agrees that both his party and campaign are lagging behind in cyberspace. At a fundraiser in Richmond, Virginia, this week, he was asked what he would do to connect with younger voters. “We’ve got to do a better job on the Internet,” he answered.

It takes a leader to lead the Revolution.

David, what age group do you find is most responsive to social media? I’m 29, I have a blog, I’m on LinkedIn and Twitter, but there are others I know in there early 20s, active in campaigns that don’t know what those things are or how to use them.

How do we identify that group and educate them?

You and I are both 29. We communicate using modern tools because we have found that the most effective way to communicate. Natch.

We need those younger than us to step up to the plate and assume a role of leadership. They need to talk about why they’re Republicans and how they communicate effectively with each other. To be honest, they need to teach us. You and me who will then teach the rest of the crew.

For example, the primary form of communication for high schoolers is text messaging. Makes sense right? They don’t have or need a BlackBerry because everyone they need to communicate with has a cell phone.

In China, I hear they don’t even cell voice cell phone plans and everyone has naked SMS. That, to me, is rad and is where this whole mobile world is going.
